How You Can Help

You can help playgroups that are in desperate need . Do you have the time, experience and commitment to help ? We need people of  all ages and from all walks of life who can support their local playgroup to continue playing a vital role in the community.

  • Improve governance, leadership, and financial knowledge of playgroups.
  • Make a real difference to your local community provision of early learning and childcare for future generations.
  • Give up some your free time by joining a playgroup committee in a trustee role or even as an ordinary committee member.
  • Provide knowledge and expertise to support the business or even help to make important decisions on behalf of the charity.
  • Put your lived experience and skills to good use.

The list below gives an idea of the types of skills knowledge and  backgrounds voluntary playgroups suggest would be most helpful:

Early years regulatory/wider education

  • Early years sector specific experience ie: practitioner, manager, support staff.
  • Out of school care worker.
  • Care Inspectorate/Education Scotland/Scottish Government.
  • Early years education: e.g. local authority, further education assessor/lecturer.
  • Understanding of SSSC Codes of Practice.
  • Social worker.
  • Understanding of child development.
  • Parent or carer.


Third sector/charity background

  • Office of Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) awareness: e.g. charity governance, OSCR annual returns, trustee reports.
  • Understanding your charities governing document and the powers/responsibilities of charity trustees.
  • Previous charity trustee.
  • Parent council committee member.


Business management/HR/finance background

  • Human resources, employment law, health and safety, risk assessments.
  • Finance, accounts, payments and receipts, pensions, payroll
  • GDPR , ICO regulations.
  • Fundraising, grant applications, Nursey Application Management Systems (NAMS).
  • Marketing, social media.
  • Policy.
  • Good written and oral communication skill.s


Admin/IT/computer background

  • Knowledge of Word/Excel etc.
  • Understanding of online meetings: e,g. Zoom, Microsoft Team.s
  • Administrator.
  • Secretary.
  • Office worker.
