New social security measures to include a Best Start Grant

Posted in News on Thursday, 23 February 2017
New social security measures to include a Best Start Grant Replacing the Sure Start Maternity Grant (SSMG) with a Best Start Grant (BSG) to include payments for second and subsequent children, and payments when children start nursery and school, is one of the key commitments made in the Scottish Government’s response to the consultation on social security payments in Scotland.

A longer application window for the maternity payment of BSG is also planned.

The SSMG is one of 11 social security benefits previously controlled by the UK Government which are now the responsibility of the Scottish Government.

The full response covering the SSMG/BSG and the other benefits is available to view on the Scottish Government website, alongside the Analysis of Written Responses and a summary of the research findings.
